U6 to U10 Coaching Advise Area

Under 6s to Under 10s Coaching is what I would class as a professional coach as the most informative years
for both players and coaches alike.
Coaching in the lower age groups is very rewarding because it’s basically the beginning of the social aspects of the game,
making new friends and bonding with a team.
To make this the most enjoyable time in a players life coaches should have a set plan of coaching.
Remember the fun aspect of this game is important and must be included in the coaching of a team in this age group.

So let’s look at the age groups involved and break them down to make coaching easier.
Firstly let’s look at the u6 s to U7s age groups and what coaches have to do to get players on their way to an
exciting time within this sport.

Under 6s to Under 7s

Let’s map out a plan of attack so that the training session will not only be fun but educational as well.

Firstly prepare for training prior to the training time.
Break the session into sections.
I have draw up a basic training session that may be used for the first few weeks of training
but if coaches wish to map out a larger plan then the Members Coaches Lounge is the place to join.

1st Stages of Training:
Step 1:  Get the players in one group and get them to tell other players their names.

Step 2:  Place the players in one line and say to them that when the coach says “STOP STAND STILL”
they must be very quiet and put their kicking foot on the ball.

Step 3:  While they are in that line the coach will assist each player to learn how to kick the ball correctly.
As per diagram the coach roles the ball to each player who kicks it back to the coach.

Step 4:  Now instead of one player kicking the ball back get two players to come to you.
The coach rolls the ball to one player who passes it to the other and then passes it back to the coach.
( Passing – Ball Control – Team Work )

Step 5:  Next we have the fun aspect where players can learn so much about each other
and coaches can view the motor skills of the players.
This drill is called tag and run and is done world wide.
Form a circle the size of that circle will depend on the age group.
One player goes around out side of the circle tags a player who chases them back to the area they came from.
This is very simple and fun.

Step 6:  Now more fun !
Divide teams into two groups and try tunnel ball this is a fun drill the again promotes fun and team work.

Step 7:  Final drill: Divide players into two teams and have a fun game of soccer.
At this stage coaches can view players who have more skills.
If players make mistakes, DON’T stop the game, just pull the player aside
and show him / her what they were doing wrong.
Show the players how to spread out within the area allowing passing to be instructed.

Coaches are advised to use a grid area with markers provided.
This grid area can be 15 x 15 steps or lesser depending on the age group.
Now that the players first few sessions were fun, exciting and educational coaches can continue to involve
players in drills like goal kicking – passing and learning how to use the whole area.

WARNING!! Never yell and scream at players and above all look like a coach.
Remember soccer is fun and as a coach you will watch those players develop into top grade players one day.
