Under 8s to Under 10s:

With the assistance of coaches from previous years all players should,
by these age groups have developed the basic skills of the sport.
Now it’s up the coach to round off the skills and start introducing positions on the field like
Defence – Midfielders – Strikers and Goal Keepers.

Coaches in this age group should gather as much information as possible regarding the players and the skills they have
so that players in each of these areas can be worked on and formulate plays and passing skills.
Again don’t forget about the fun aspect as this is still important for the development of players concerned.
Again coaches must prepare a training session in advance introducing drills that will suit all areas of the game.
The Coaches Members Lounge is available with all the drills you will ever need.

Here is a basic format:

Step 1:  Warm up; Get the players into a circle kicking the ball across the circle.
( Kicking-Passing - Weighted passes – Team work – Talking – Running onto the ball – Direction)

Step 2:  Place a player in the middle of the circle as a defender.
His job will be to stop the ball and can be replaced in the centre by the player who’s ball he stops.

Step 3:  My favourite! Here is a drill I use in almost all age groups from u7s to seniors.

pauls drill

Each players has a ball at their feet.
On the command of the coach the ball is taken to (b)
then the players run to (c) and back to the ball and kicks it back to (a).
The players must dribble the ball to (b) and place it in one straight line so that they
can see their ball after running to and back from (c).

Coaches can place two players in each group with one ball so it becomes a tag team drill
if they wish but over the years I have added to this drill and made it harder and harder.
The end result will be that all aspects of the game will be involved.

Step 4:  See the Members Lounge for more exciting drills that are available.
Use drills that contain passing and team work in this age group and watch the skills develop.
Above all keep the training sessions interesting and don’t forget Throw-ins and goal kicking.
